Hey girls! So, the other day I was scrolling on Instagram when I saw the prettiest nail polish! Anyone who knows me knows that I LOVE nails, so of course I clicked on the picture and was so surprised to see that the nail polish was created by a teen entrepreneur. Let me tell you a little bit about her business.
Shai started Shai’s World when she was only 10 years old. She’s 14 now, and her business is still growing strong. All of her nail polish is 100% vegan, and made without the toxic chemicals that are in so many other brands. Plus, the colors and quality are amazing! I can’t wait to try them.
Shai is also passionate about inspiring kids and teens to be successful. She is also a published author, and has shared her story in a book entitled The Science Behind It: Formulating Success At Any Age. Today, I’ll be interviewing her.
Hi Shai! Tell us 3 fun facts about you?
I enjoy shopping, cheering and hanging out with friends.
Your nail polish is so cute! I absolutely can’t wait to try Cotton Candy, and Lemon Drop! I also especially love all of the colors in your spring collection. How do you come up with the names for each color?
First, I come up with a theme and then I name the polishes around the theme. In the case of “Cotton Candy” and “Lemon Drop” the theme was candy. This was for the Spring Collection that featured lots of pastels.
Along with your shipments you include inspirational messages such as “I Love Myself Just the Way I Am”. Why is it so important that girls love themselves and have healthy self-esteem?
It’s very important as people can be so mean and / or nasty towards each other. I’ve even seen beautiful girls not like someone for no apparent reason. I feel like, if you love yourself, you can love others. There is no right or wrong way of how you are suppose to look. Embrace everything about yourself.
So true, we should love ourselves and let that love overflow to others. Instead of competing and hating on other girls, we should encourage and support them.
What are some of your favorite things about having your own business and being successful doing something you love?
One of the my most favorite things about having my own business and being successful doing something I love is the “freedom”. I enjoy creating my own schedule as I’m homeschooled and so are most of my friends. I also love being my own boss. I’m a leader by default, so taking the lead in my business is fun.
What are some challenges you’ve had as an entrepreneur and how do you overcome them?
Some challenges I have had since being an entrepreneur are “Time management” It’s been hard juggling school, fun, business and family time. However, I’ve gotten better since starting my business as I have a weekly schedule that my mom helps me manage.
That’s great that your mom helps you with your schedule. Time management can be really difficult. It’s good that you have a consistent schedule that helps you stay balanced.
What would you say to a girl who wants to become an entrepreneur, but doesn’t really know what she wants to do or where to start?
I would ask her, “what is it that she loves to do?” Of course, if she has more than one talent, I would ask her to focus on just one and try to incorporate the others later. Initially, it may be hard, but focusing on one talent will allow her to organize her thoughts. Next, it’s important to conduct research on what you desire to do. Take your time on this as you want to know as much as possible about the industry of your choice. Lastly, figure out who your target audience is and where they reside, shop, drive, etc. You want to know as much information about them as possible. It will make it easier for you to sell your product and / or service.
Those are very helpful steps to starting a business.
There are so many girls out there who have business ideas but they’re afraid to try or put their ideas out there because they’re young, especially young women of color. A lot of girls feel like no one will take them seriously because of their age. What is your advice to them?
My advice would be to go for it. Never let anyone discount your desire to fulfill your dreams. Prove them wrong by offering a good product with amazing service. Be bold, be assertive and confident in who you are. Never dim your light, as I’m always telling other young girls to always “Sparkle and Shine.”
That reminds me of a quote I read that says, “Don’t tell people your plans, show them your results.” Once people see your amazing product or service, and your confidence – success is yours. I agree with what you said. Sparkle, shine, and go for it. Chase your dreams and make them a reality.
How do you balance running your business with school, friends, and just being a teen and having fun?
As I mentioned earlier, it was hard initially. However, I take it week by week as my schedule changes each week. I attend school on Mondays and Wednesdays and the rest of the days are for homework, and / or events, or creating more product. It all depends. When I have nothing going on the weekend, especially Saturdays I try my best to hang out with my friends. Sundays are “Family Days” as I visit my Papa and afterwards spend time with my mom, dad and brother.
Family Days and time with friends are always nice and so important.
Everyone needs people in their corner to cheer them on, motivate them, and inspire them. Who does that for you?
OMG! My mom and my nanny (grandmother) They can be so “Extra” at times as I’m a humbled person and I like being behind the scenes. Them on the other hand, are super proud, excited, and really pump everything up. It can be the smallest thing and it becomes a BIG DEAL.
I feel you! I’m a behind-the-scenes type of person too. It was hard for me to even start this blog! My Mom and Grandma were my biggest cheerleaders. My Mom especially always pushed me to step outside of my comfort zone, and because of her I have done lots of things that I wouldn’t have done on my own. Sounds like you have some wonderful people in your corner, and that’s a huge blessing.
What are your plans for Shai’s World in the future?
I definitely plan to expand my line to other beauty products while also pitching stores and nail shops. I also want to conduct workshops and incorporate some other amazing surprises! Stay tuned.
We can’t wait! You are such an inspiration and it has truly been a pleasure interviewing you. We wish you the very best of luck for the future. Looking forward to seeing more of your awesome nail polish, and hearing about all of the amazing things you’re doing.
